本书从理论探究、实践智慧和教师成长三个方面通过30个不同的教学案例和教学实践描述和总结了做最好的英语老师所要具备的能力和智慧。细看目录标题，这些文章要解决的问题和提出的专业教学意见正好是我在专业教学成长过程中所碰到的困难问题和困惑。拿到书的那一刻，我便一口气读完了整本书的内容。书中把实践和理论结合地如此默契，以至于我对教学理论顿生好感。我发现不是教学理论枯燥，而是平时的教学实践我没能找到恰当的教学理论做强大的支撑。书中有几篇对我的触动颇大，我体会颇多颇为深刻。
一．理论探究
在理论探究模块，文中提到：“母语教育是一种传承，而外语教育则是对另外一种文化理解、吸收和消化的过程。英语教学目标应该是教会学生用英语来学习文化，认识世界，培养心智，而不只是英语教学。”但在现行英语教材中，说明文和应用文的比例太大，文章内容枯燥无味。如果在阅读教学中，适当增加一些文学作品的比例，让学生在学习知识的同时，有所感悟和思考，受到情感熏陶，获得思想启迪，享受审美乐趣。文中还举例指出了我们中小学英语课堂教学的一个误区，就是学以致用并不等于即学即用。英语教师往往在新知识授课结束之后，马上让学生表演，期待学生活学活用，这有时会严重增加学生的焦虑感。我们要根据实际情况相应地突出“学中用”、“学后用”，不能拔苗助长，盲目追求即学即用。反复听，大声朗读，认真模仿，这样的一条英语学习之路有人形象地称之为映像（shadowing）教学法。英语教学要树立语块意识，把英语教学的中心转移到语块教学中去，促进学生对语块的积累、掌握和运用。以语块为中心的英语教学有助于克服传统学习方法的弊端。
二．实践智慧
在实践智慧模块，独辟蹊径的教学设计打破英语阅读教学“思路因循守旧，设计千篇一律”的困境，给人耳目一新和豁然开朗的感觉。根据“学习金字塔理论”，效果最好的学习方式是Practicebydoing（做中学）和Teachingothers（实际演练）,这两种学习方式可以让学生记住75%以上的学习内容。效果好的阅读任务具有真实性、整体性和层次性的.特点。阅读教学最佳结构是橄榄形，两头小中间大。老师和学生要把主要时间和精力，放在如何使用恰当的阅读策略获取主要事实和观点上。读后的拓展要像豹子尾巴那样刚健有力，去激发学生独立思考，批判性地接受文章中的观点，或创造性地使用已获取的信息。这节阅读课，老师“反其道而思之”，从结论往回推，反过来思考，让思维朝着对立面的方向发展，从问题的相反面深入地进行探索。本节课的阅读材料是一片采访稿，采访的中心环节就是提出和回答问题。一般的思维方式是，根据问题来寻找相应的答案。但是，本节课的教学设计，先呈现被采访者的回答，让学生快速阅读。然后，老师再让学生从记者的立场去思考“要得到这样的答案，我们应该提出什么样的问题”。这样一来，学生要提出正确的问题，就必须看懂这段问题，并准确概括出其段落大意，最后从两个问题挑选一个正确的。这一个小小的改动，让学生从被动的阅读者转变成了积极主动的思考者。这样的英语阅读教学创新，在有理、有序、有效的基础上，实现了一种自我的超越和突破。
