Every morning at approximately 8:48 a.m., I pass it—the brick building that I visited many times as a child and that once seemed so grand, now a miniature playhouse in my mind.

My father used to live there, along with 549 other inmates. When I’d visit, as I often did, we’d chat and laugh—through a glass wall, telephones in hand.

Over the years, the weekly commutes to visit my father became rituals. Eventually, after several years, we were allowed real visits when he was moved to a lower-security facility—the kind of visits where you can hug and tickle, where a conversation’s connection doesn’t depend on the distorted and crackly voice coming through the telephone, where words can be freely exchanged without the clock ticking, reminding you that time is slipping, moving faster than it should, faster than you’d like.

You’d think his absence would have prevented him from making rules, enforcing discipline and participating in the day-to-day of my childhood, but that wasn’t so. 1In person, we’d talk, not just speak. His life lessons, never cliché but always earnest, struck a chord with me and I soaked up every word. He told me that not having a father had been a detriment to his ego and that he’d overcompensated by feeling infallible well into his 30s. He spoke of the shame he’d caused his family and how there were times when he almost cracked, being isolated from his family, from love, from who he used to be.

Other children looked forward to Saturdays, long stretches of time when their fathers would take them to swimming or hockey lessons, to the park for a walk or for an ice-cream cone. I could barely sleep with anticipation, getting up as early as 5 a.m. to hop in the car for the two-hour drive ahead.

I had those too, but I also had my jail friends, the girls and boys with whom I would run around and play tag, not truly comprehending why these individuals probably understood me and my life far better than anyone else.

There is no same opinion among people as to the view of wealth. Some people may think that wealth is the most important and powerful thing in life, while some other people believe that there are many things that cannot be bought with wealth.As far as I am concerned, I agree with the latter opinion. There’s an old proverb, “Money can cure hunger, but it can’t cure happiness” which simply means wealth can buy us some material things but cannot make us happy and free from sadness or worries.

现代英语教学已经由传统的知识型方法正迅速地向语言交际运用型教学方法过渡。也就是现在教育界说得较多的“素质教育”问题。英语，作为一门语言课，教师如何教、引导学生如何学？这不仅是目前要求每位教学一线执教者和教育研究家必须回答的问题，而且是学校管理者、操作者以及全社会都关心的问题。学生素质的提高，一要靠自身临场的发挥，更要靠平时教师对他们学习解题方法的训练有素。教师如果靠时间一题一题的传授，学生靠一题一题地记“会”，那么在考场上最多是个中分低能的机器，就不用说是将来适应社会了。会教的人，往往是教给学生金钥匙；因此，只要你从事教育教学，你都不光是给学生灌输知识，而必须走向学生“交钥匙”的道路。对教学悟的深，你教给学生金钥匙，悟的不深你交给学生铜钥匙；哪怕你交给学生铁钥匙，也比交给他们现存的金山、银山强。因为现在教材和考试的阅读理解文章中，普遍源于英语报刊的“原汁原味”的真东西越来越多，“国产”英文材料越来越少；没有拿到“钥匙”的人，只能在知识殿堂的门外徘徊。
在小学阶段要不要设立专门的阅读训练课程呢？训练的具体方式和方法又是什么呢？本文拟就小学英语教学中阅读教学方法问题作一些讨论。
一，设立小学英语阅读教学训练的目的。
小学英语课程既是学生通过英语学习和实践活动，逐步掌握英语知识和技能，提高语言实际运用能力的过程；又是他们磨砺意志、陶冶情操、拓展视野、丰富生活经历、开发思维能力、发展个性和提高人文素养的过程。基础教研阶段英语课程的任务是：激发和培养学生学习英语的兴趣，使学生树立自信心，养成良好的学习习惯和形成有效的学习策略，发展自主学习的能力和合作精神；使学生掌握一定的英语基础知识和听、说、读、写技能，形成一定的综合运用语言能力；培养学生的观察、记忆、思维、想象能力和创新精神；帮助学生了解世界和中西方文化差异，拓展视野，培养爱国主义精神，形成健康的人生观，为他们的终身学习和发展打下良好的基础。
因此，在教学实践中，我尝试在五年级的学生中开展英语短文的阅读教学和阅读训练。为什么要在小学阶段进行专题的英语阅读的训练呢？首先我们来谈谈什么是阅读理解。阅读理解是读者从语篇中获取信息的过程。著名语言学家Christine Nuttall认为，作者将自己头脑中的信息编码（encoding），形成语篇（text），读者再把语篇解码，获取信息。作者要把他头脑里的信息（一个主意，一个事实或一种情感）传达出去，让别人理解，他首先必须把信息形诸于文字，即编码，作者亦被称为编码者。作者一旦完成了编码过程，信息就以语篇的形式存在于作者的头脑之外。阅读过程则是一个解码过程。作者要传达的信息进入读者头脑，交际过程随之完成。但是，交际过程并非如此简单，因为在交际的各个环节中都可能出现“故障”，致使交际中断，信息无法传递。信息在从作者的头脑到达读者的头脑里的过程中，若干因素会影响读者接受信息。这些因素被心理学家们称之为变量。 “文字含义并不是仅仅存在于文本中的符号，被动地等待读者吸收。阅读者必须积极投入其中，努力挖掘它的含义” 由此我们可以理解到在阅读过程中，语言材料和读者是交互作用的。文字含义既不存在于语篇（text）之中，也不存在于读者之内，它产生于两者相互作用之中。在英语阅读过程中，存在着若干变量（ variables），这些变量无疑都会对阅读理解产生影响。五年级的学生学习英语已有一段时间了，他们的听说读写能力也有了一定的基础，开展阅读教学和阅读训练不但能关注每个学生情感，激发他们学习英语的兴趣，还能帮助他们建立学习的成就感和自信心，使他们在学习过程中发展综合语言运用能力，提高人文素养，增强实践能力，培养创新精神。
二，小学英语课堂阅读教学方法。
进入了五年级，课文从原来简短的对话一下子转换成较长的具有故事性的短文。而每个模块的Unit2 则出现了50个词左右的小短文，学习的要求从简单的听读提高到阅读理解短文内容并就课后提出的问题作出书面或口头的回答。由于每课出现的问题有5－6个，有一般疑问句也有特殊疑问句，学生们一下子适应不了，觉得英语真难啊。个别学生还出现了抗拒的心理，说什么也不愿意开口读，动手写。
分析了学生学习的心理和学习的方法后，我马上调整了教学计划，在讲授新课的同时注重这两种句式的.运用和分析。通过口头的、书面的练习、学生们对问句的形式及回答的方式都做到心中有数。其方法如下：一、准确理解疑问词―― 准确理解疑问词是解答好提问的关键。要想准确回答特殊疑问句，则必须首先弄清楚各个特殊疑问词的意思。如果指人要用who，若指物就用what；指年龄用how old，指时间用what time 、 when；若问 “数量”用how many（可数）或how much（不可数）；指地点用where，指原因用why，指程度用how等等。 二，一般疑问句的回答方式―― 一般疑问句的回答方式比较特别，学生们通过形式多样的练习得出：以Yes / No,作开头，回答时要含有问句的第一个词或是回应问题的中心词。如：Did Tom play football yesterday? 回答时可用：Yes, he did. / No, he didn’t. 回答从简单的Yes / No，到规范的Yes, he did. / No, he didn’t. 再到No, he played basketball.逐步发展学生的英语运用能力。
在学习Sam ate six hamburgers中。我设置了以下的问题：

( 2 ) Did Lingling eat any hamburgers?
( 3 ) Does she like hamburgers?
( 4 ) What did they give to Sam?
( 5 ) What is Mum going to cook tonight?
通过以上的训练，学生们在回答问题时会分析问题中一般疑问句的有( 2 ) Did Lingling eat any hamburgers? ( 3 ) Does she like hamburgers?；特殊疑问句的是( 1 ) Who ate six hamburgers? ( 4 ) What did they give to Sam?( 5 ) What is Mum going to cook tonight?。针对各种问题的回答方式，他们就会很轻松地回答：
( 1 ) Who ate six hamburgers?
Sam. / Sam ate six hamburgers.
( 2 ) Did Lingling eat any hamburgers?
No, she didn’t. / No, she ate a sandwich.
( 3 ) Does she like hamburgers?
No, she doesn’t. / No.
( 4 ) What did they give to Sam?
They gave their hamburgers to Sam. / Hamburgers.
( 5 ) What is Mum going to cook tonight?
She is going to cook Chinese food tonight. / Chinese food.
这样的阅读训练，结合了阅读的理解和解题技巧的培养，课程设置从易到难，让学生们，特别是一些中下生都能感受到成功的乐趣。
接下来，在阅读教学中，采用提问式、谈话式、讨论式教学法，将课堂教学引向激发——创造性模式。阅读文章时,对所学文章要点,教师提出要求,学生阅读,寻找答案、引导学生阅读时注意抓住全文的主旨。主要有：
（1） 导读（Pre-reading）
“导”体现的是“以教师为主导”。教师在学生阅读课文之前可适当的讲解与本课有关的背景知识；也可以充分利用文中的插图进行导读语言设计。通过warm-up activities扫除文中可能出现的语言障碍（但有些生词词义应该鼓励学生从所学的同义词、英语短语中猜测），还可以提出一些问题。目的是激发学生阅读的兴趣和求知的欲望，并使学生初步感知课文内容，为正式阅读作了准备。例如在教授Module 7 Community. He can’t see. 我利用实物投影出示了狗帮助人类的两幅图片。

（2） 速读（Fast-reading）
这一步骤主要是指导学生带着问题进行搜索式阅读和跳跃式的阅读（Skimming and Scanning），以获取有关信息，了解文章大义。然后让学生回答有关问题，或让学生做正误判断练习，以检查学生的理解程度。

三，其他训练的方式。
Bolinger & Sear 在“Aspects of language”一书（1981.2）中说语言是思维的重要工具，也是一个人的语言运用水平和交际的能力。传统的教学中使大多数学生听得懂说不出。因此，在整体理解课文的基础上，通过一连串的听说活动深化对语言的理解, 然后开展运用语言的活动，把理解和运用有机的结合起来。
1）单人或双人活动（Individual or Pair work）
为了巩固学生所学的知识，及时检查学生对课文理解的程度。速读和细读之后组织学生一人或两人一组的活动。教师问，学生答，或学生一人问一人答。这能使学生掌握文章的事实和细节。还可鼓励学生分析主题句，归纳段落大意，中心思想等。例如：What’s the main idea of the text? / What does it talk about?
2）小组讨论与回答（Discussion & Respond）
Module 8 Unit 2为例。教师提出问题,Did Lingling write a letter to Daming? / Did she go to Amy’s school? / Did they have class at nine? / Did they do exercises? / Did the bell ring at eight?…让学生在小组内自由回答或讨论答案。让学生通过回答问题和讨论答案初步了解课文的意思。教师在听学生回答问题的过程中也可以弄清学生的薄弱环节。这样的阅读训练,就能有的放矢,既不浪费时间,又能吸引学生的注意力。学生在解答问题的同时,阅读能力和口语能力都得到了锻炼。同时也提高了学生的逻辑思维能力和语言运用能力。通过小组学习、自我学习、教师辅助学习等形式，让学生明白到课文的理解并不是逐字逐句的译成中文，而是理解关键的词组和了解短文的大意。并指导学生在做题之前先观察问题的类型，从问句中找出关键词，再从原文中找出相应的句子，分析、综合之后再做题。
3）“双主体”教育模式。
此外我还注意因学生特点实施教学。学生的发展状况受先天遗传和后天环境、教育的影响，在学习英语知识、培养技能和能力的认知过程中存在着认知的个别差异。认知差异既体现在认知能力方面，也体现在认知风格上，学生的发展因此呈现出丰富多彩的特点。通过因材施教使全体学生的素质得到全面发展，为全面提高英语教学质量提供重要保证。在教学中要充分发挥学生的主体作用，使他们排除心理障碍，建立信心，提高学习兴趣，改进学习方法。同时，在教学中要发挥教师的指导作用，组织好课内外各种活动和指导学生学习英语的方法，为他们选材、解疑，帮助他们养成良好的学习习惯和培养自学能力，从而保持高昂的学习积极性。在英语阅读教学中,介绍阅读内容和文化背景，精心设计好各类问题，逐步加深理解。引导学生对文章内容进行预测，激发学生阅读的欲望，在分析问题的过程中获得知识。在阅读时,教师要引导学生唤起想象与抽象思维更好地协同活动, 语言知识的讲解要适度，操练要结合语境，使文章内容更有生动现实感,使学生有身临其境的感觉,这样就能提高阅读效果。
其实，不单在英语阅读教学中教师要这样做，在日常教学中，教师应遵循“双主体”的教学模式：教师为主导，学生为主体，学生在教师的指导下积极主动地去学习。教师在教学中尊重学生，相信学生，把学习的主动权交给学生，放手让学生自己去大胆学习、实践，充分调动学生的积极性，发挥其主观能动性和潜能，才能达到发展智力、培养能力的目的。学生作为主体参与课堂教学，让学生积极参与教学过程，在参与中得到训练和发展。
相信经过长时间有计划、有目的的系统训练，学生加快阅读速度，提高阅读的正确性，这两者一定能有机地统一起来。以提高学生阅读英语和运用英语进行交际的能力，为继续学习和运用英语切实打好基础。

1.先读题时只能是读其问题或题干，而不能读问题后的选项，否则不仅浪费时间，而且也无法记住众多答案所表达的众多信息。
2.在读了题之后，要把这些问题记在心里，并带着这些问题去阅读短文，关于这一点考生是要经过反复的训练才能形成能力的，因为短文后的这些问题本身所表达的信息并不象短文那样有情节，也不象短文那样连贯，所以有不少同学在开始试用这种方法时，往往先读了题之后(尤其是当问题较多时)再读短文时，又忘记是什么问题了。
3.带着问题读短文时，对短文中出现的那些与问题有关的.词句，你可以用一支铅笔在短文中作些记号，以便为下一步选择作好准备，但也要注意不要每读到一个与问题有关的信息点就停下来去对照后面的问题，因为这样转来转去要耽误一些时间，另一方面有些问题往往要通过对短文的全面了解才能作出结论，而不能仅仅从一、二个信息点作出判断。
4.带着问题读完短文之后，接着便是选择理解题的答案。虽然你是带着问题去阅读短文的，但也并不是说你在阅读时带去的问题全部得到了答案，也可能有些还没有把握(尤其是一些主观理解题)，这时你同样要带着这些“疑题”去跳读短文。

Some students complain that there is no need to learn English because we live in China, while when we look around the world, we can find that there are more and more foreigners learn Chinese. As the world gets globalized, the world is watching us and foreigners are very interested in our culture. some of them learn Chinese for they sense the great commercial potential and want to do business with us. There is even a competition for foreigners to show their level of Chinese. I am so surprised by their insistance. The foreigners can learn Chinese so well, so there no reason for us to give up English.
