By “burned”, I'm talking about having a bad experience with trusting others.

Well, I hope you haven't had a lot of bad experiences when it comes to trusting others.
I also hope you have a lot of friends you can trust, and a lot of friends that trust you.

Outside the Bible, these six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only for himself but also for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be, to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely. A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to put to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying: "I think, therefore am."
But the best definition of existence ever saw did another philosopher who said: "To be is to be in relations." If this true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity of our relations. Unfortunately we are so constituted that we get to love our routine. But apart from our regular occupation how much are we alive? If you are interest-ed only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned--poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports, unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs--you are dead.
Contrariwise, it is true that every time you acquire a new interest--even more, a new accomplishment--you increase your power of life. No one who is deeply interested in a large variety of subjects can remain unhappy; the real pessimist is the person who has lost interest.
Bacon said that a man dies as often as he loses a friend. But we gain new life by contacts, new friends. What is supremely true of living objects is only less true of ideas, which are also alive. Where your thoughts are, there will your live be also. If your thoughts are confined only to your business, only to your physical welfare, only to the narrow circle of the town in which you live, then you live in a narrow cir-conscribed life. But if you are interested in what is going on in China, then you are living in China~ if you’re interested in the characters of a good novel, then you are living with those highly interesting people, if you listen intently to fine music, you are away from your immediate surroundings and living in a world of passion and imagination.
To be or not to be--to live intensely and richly, merely to exist, that depends on ourselves. Let widen and intensify our relations. While we live, let live!
Dear Anyone Having a Bad Week,
I'm sorry. I have no idea why your week is bad, or how bad it actually is. I don't know if you've told anyone, if there's anything that could fix it or if it's made you rather unpleasant to be around. But I do know that I'm sorry that you're hurting, or stressed, or exhausted, or grieving, or frustrated, or depressed, or lonely, or scared or lost.
I thought about writing this letter in a couple of different ways. I thought about writing it about the things you could do to feel better: show yourself compassion, go outside and look at the trees, look at a baby photo of yourself. Or I thought about focusing the letter on how the "bad weeks" can actually be pretty beautiful, if you look at them the right way. I almost wrote those letters, and maybe at some point I will, but I think I ended up deciding that I wasn't writing to make anyone feel better -- I just want you to feel heard.
There's something about humans that makes us crave for our pain to be recognized. There is something inherently good and comforting in having someone say, "Yeah, that sounds really hard," or, "It really sucks that you have to deal with all that."
But unfortunately, that's not always the direction that society pushes us in. We have been taught that bad days are to be silently borne beneath a bright smile; that expressions of pain are uncomfortable.
I want you to know you can feel free to spill your bad day all over the place and wear it on the front of your shirt.
I want you to know that the expressions of your pain are beautiful and that I will try my very hardest to feel the hurt with you. I want you to know that your grumpy, stressed out, short-tempered self is just as awesome as your cheerful self. Please do not shun your suffering.
In writing this, know that I hear you, and let yourself be healed. I hope your day turns around, and that even if it doesn't, you can still find a few moments of beauty and/or happiness amidst the crappiness. For all of you not having bad days -- carry on, and enjoy.
Sincerely,

First, we need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the capabilities in achieving our desires.Like the Sunflower, it knew it had the capability to overcome its obstacle because it trusted in the Universal Truth and had faith it would succeed.
Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

The move comes within two months of the producers, Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, settling a three-year-old lawsuit with actress Sharon Stone, who claimed they had promised to pay her at least $14 million even if the film was not made.
Stone is now set to reprise her role as Catherine Tramell, the manipulative, seductive novelist at the heart of a murder investigation in the original. That film, her last big hit, also starred Michael Douglas and was directed by Paul Verhoeven.
The sequel was originally due to go into production in 20xx, albeit without Douglas and Verhoeven, who reportedly had problems with each other the first time around. Several directors were attached, including John McTiernan, who pulled out after Stone reportedly vetoed Benjamin Bratt as her co-star.
Caton-Jones has most recently been working on "Shooting Dogs," which is based on the true story of a Catholic priest and an English teacher caught in the Rwandan genocide. Before that, he helmed "City by the Sea," toplining Robert De Niro and Frances McDormand. His other credits include "The Jackal," "Rob Roy" and "Memphis Belle."

New English Tests Are Better, but Harder
Scores on English tests are very important to students around the world. In order to make sure that they do their best, both students and teachers should stay informed of how these tests are changing.
Clive Roberts is a director at ELS Educational Services, one of the companies that trains students in English. Mr. Roberts says the tests are changing greatly in response to the global growth in the use of English as a lingua franca – the common language used among people with different native languages.
Mr. Roberts says English "is one of the keys now to international student mobility. So, for that reason, a lot of new tests are being developed; old tests are being revamped to meet the needs of universities and employers worldwide."
In other words, students increasingly need English in order to study and work in other countries. So, schools and businesses are asking for more accurate tests.
Changes in language testing
Mr. Roberts says several parts of standardized tests have changed recently. Now, many tests are given on computers. And, he says, tests measure all four skills of language learning: reading, listening, speaking and writing.
"A lot of are now delivered online, all four skills are being tested, in some cases, by computer, in particular speaking and writing skills, which are the most difficult to assess on a computer environment."
Computer testing will reduce the length of time required for testing, because the tests adjust to the test-taker's ability. These computer-adaptive tests also increase accuracy in scoring. Computer-adaptive tests change depending on the test-taker's responses. They can become more or less difficult during the testing session. For this reason, the set of correct answers will be different for each test-taker.
Cultural sensitivity
Another change to language testing relates to cultural sensitivity. The term refers to material on a test that is based on a certain culture or is hard for test-takers from different cultures to understand.
Mr. Roberts says test development companies are now hiring people with intercultural communication backgrounds to review test items. The companies want to make sure the test does not upset test-takers. Having negative feelings may affect a student's performance on the test.
Accuracy in language testing
Changes to English proficiency tests make them better at measuring the learners' ability. However, Mr. Roberts says the changes may mean the tests are more difficult for some students.
"The tests have become more proficiency-oriented. The items are being designed in such a way that they test real-world proficiency and not simply sort of an artificial environment or a specific set of skills that are taught in a classroom. So a lot of authentic texts, a lot of authentic listening passages are being used."
The changes mean students have to be able to understand English the way it is used in everyday life, not just in textbooks.
What the tests measure
Another big change is the way in which a student's performance on the tests is measured. Mr. Roberts says that many tests are measured according to the Common European Frame of Reference (CERF) scale of language proficiency.
This measurement, Mr. Roberts says, "is similar to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) guidelines, which are used by American universities and government agencies, respectively."
The rating scales and guidelines are designed to show what the learner is able to do in the areas of speaking, reading, listening and writing.
Mr. Roberts says, "It gives a description of what they can do with the language and then assigns a numerical value to that particular level."
Mr. Roberts says he believes linking the scores and the scales means the tests provide more useful information about a learner's ability than they did before.
In addition, changes to the tests will encourage schools to teach their students to use English for everyday life and study.

The beginning
起点
In the beginning, all things are hopeful. We prepare ourselves to start anew. Though we may be intent on the magnificent journey ahead, all things are contained in the first moment: our optimism, our faith, our resolution, our innocence.
In order to start, we must make a decision. The decision is a commitment to daily self-cultivation. We must make a strong connection to our inner selves. Outside matters are superfluous. Alone and naked, we negotiate all of life’s travails. Therefore, we alone must make something of ourselves, transforming ourselves into the instruments for experiencing the deepest spiritual essence of life.
Once we make our decision, all things will come too us. Auspicious signs are not a superstition, but a confirmation. They are a response. It is said that if one chooses to pray to a rock with enough devotion, even that rock will come alive. In the same way, once we choose to commit ourselves to spiritual practice, even the mountains and valleys will reverberate to the sound of our decision.

“Oh, May I Have a Bottle of Coca cola?” ----Optimism: another kind of spirit in the
Sichuan earthquake
“May I have a bottle of coca cola, I’m thirsty?” such a remark appears to be commonplace in our daily life. However, it was of great significance when it was produced on a special occasion by a special person. A little girl made the above remark the minute she was rescued from the ruins of
Sichuan earthquake. Suddenly, I was greatly buoyed up, because several days’ grief had taken me away.
I, a sentimental girl, simply forgot there was a kind of spirit called optimism. Yes, optimism is needed in such a life-death battle, and it is also needed in our post-disaster reconstruction. Optimism: a belief in the darkness Optimism can help one to be happier, stronger and more confident. Pessimism leads, by contrast, to hopelessness, sickness and failure. In the context of the great earthquake, what else can be more helpful and effective than teaching those in trap a spirit named optimism? The belief that you can get through decide whether or not you will. An old man, for instance, living through more than one crisis: the Chinese War against
Japan’ Invasion, Chinese War of Liberation, showed his sense of humor and optimism by saying “hey, I thought the shake had brought me aboard!” when he was saved by a contingent of foreign rescue members. Noticeably, the earthquake just like the one of the wars he has experienced, in his eyes, which was destined to be defeated in the end. It was the old man’s belief that he would survive that brought him a second life. A miracle, isn’t it? Optimism: a guide on the way forward An optimistic attitude is not a luxury; but it’s a necessity. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, and how you perform. It has been two months since the
Sichuan earthquake took place, facing the fact that our beloved ones have lost and our homeland has been seriously destroyed, how will we view the road ahead? Will we look up in hope or down in despair? I believe in the upward look, and I’m confident that our mother nation will choose the former, too. Take education as an example. In order to secure the normal education for the students in disaster-affected areas, local and central governments pooled their efforts to provide necessary educational facilities and materials at the first minute, thus making studying a reality instead of a dream, thus turning a sea of ruins into a promising land on which students are playing, learning and growing.
As the leader of the nation, CPC set us an example of optimism, therefore, there’s a good reason to believe that under the leadership of CPC,
Sichuan province will usher a new round of development and prosperity. Optimism diverts our attention away from negativism and channels it into positive, upward thinking. The earthquake is by no means a fate for us but a trial that entails concerted wisdom, efforts of one mind and one heart, and above all, a spirit of optimism.

Now as to the matter of lying. You want to be verycareful about lying, otherwise you are nearly sure to getcaught, once caught, you can never again be, in theeyes of the pure and the good, what you werebefore. Many a young person has injured himselfpermenently throuth a single clumsy and ill-finished lie,the result of carelessness born of incomplete training. Some authorities hold that the young ought not to lie atall. That, of course, is putting it rather stronger than necessary. Still, while I can't go quite so far asthat, I do maintain, and I believe I am right, that the young ought to be temperate in the use of thisgreat art until practice and experience shall give them that confidence, elegance, precision whichalone make the accomplishment graceful and profitable. Patience, diligence, painstaking attentionto detail - these are the requirments. These, in time ,will make the student perfect. Upon these, andupon these only, mayhe rely as the sure foundation for future eminence.
Think what tedious years of study, thought, practice, and experience ,went to the equipment of thepeerless old master who was able to impose upon the whole world with the lofty and soundingmaxim that "Truth is mighty and will prevail."- The most majestic compound feature of fact whichany of woman born has yet achieved.
For the history of our race and every individual's experience, are sown thick with evidence that atruth is not hard to kill and that a lie told well is immortal. There is in Bostain a monument of the manwho discover the anesthesia. Many people are aware, in these later days, that he didn't discover it atall, but stole the discovery from another man. Is the truth mighty, and will it prevail? No, My hearers, the monument is made of hard materials, but the lie it tells will outlast a millon years. An awkward, feeble, leaky lie is a thing which you ought to make it your unceasing study to avoid. Why, youmight as well tell the truth at once and be done with it.

If you are feeling that life just cannot be any worse for you, it can be challenging to think positive thoughts. When we are stressed, depressed, upset, or otherwise in a negative state of mind because we perceive that "bad things" keep happening to us, it is important to shift those negative thoughts to something positive. If we don't, we will only attract more "bad things."
many say their most painful moments are saying good-bye to those they love. after watching cheryl, my daughter-in-law, through the six long months her mother suffered towards death, i think the most painful moments can be in the waiting to say good-bye.
cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. they spent the long afternoons praying, soothing, comforting, and retelling their shared memories.
as her mother‘s pain intensified and more medication was needed to ease her into sedation, cheryl sat for hours of silent vigil by her mother‘s bed.
each time she kissed her mother before leaving, her mother would tear up and say, "i‘m sorry you drove so far and sat for so long and i didn‘t even wake up to talk with you."
cheryl would tell her not to worry, it didn‘t matter, still her mother felt she had let her down and apologized at each good-bye until the day cheryl found a way to give her mother the same reassurance her mother had given to her so many times.
"mom, do you remember when i made the high school basketball team?" cheryl‘s mother nodded. "you‘d drive so far and sit for so long and i never even left the bench to play. you waited for me after every game and each time i felt bad and apologized to you for wasting your time." cheryl gently took her mother‘s hand.
"do you remember what you would say to me?"
"i would say i didn‘t come to see you play, i came to see you."
"and you meant those words, didn‘t you."
"yes, i really did."
"well, now i say the same words to you. i didn‘t come to see you talk, i came to see you."
her mother understood and smiled as she floated back into sleep.
their afternoons together passed quietly into days, weeks, and months. their love filled the spaces between their words. to the last day they ministered to each other in the stillness, love given and received just by seeing each other.
a love so strong that, even in this deepened silence that followed their last good-bye, cheryl can still hear her mother‘s love.
There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.
He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He's very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.
He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant's connfidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.
Now, the merchant's 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, “Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I’ll be alone. How lonely I’ll be!”
Thus, he asked the 4th wife, “I loved you most, and owed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?” “No way!” replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.
The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, “I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?” “No!” replied the 3rd wife. “Life is so good over here! I’m going to remarry when you die!” The merchant’s heart sank and turned cold.
He then asked the 2nd wife, “I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?” “I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!” replied the 2nd wife. “At the very most, I can only send you to your grave.” The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.
Then a voice called out: “I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go.” The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, “I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!”
Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives
The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die.
Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.
The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.
The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.
Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament.

dear god:
now that i am no longer young, i have friends whose mothers have passed away. i have heard these sons and daughters say they never fully appreciated their mothers until it was too late to tell them.i am blessed with the dear mother who is still alive. i appreciate her more each day.my mother does not change, but l do. as i grow older and wiser, i realize what an extraordinary person she is. how sad that l am unable to speak these words in her presence, but they flow easily from my pen.how does a daughter begin to thank her mother for life itself? for the love, patience and just plain hard work that go into raising a child? for running after a toddler, for understanding a moody teenager, for tolerating a college student who knows everything? for waiting for the clay when a daughter realizes how wise her mother really is?how does a grown woman thank a mother for continuing to be a mother? for being ready with advice (when asked) or remaining silent when it is most appreciated? for not saying,"1 told you so,"when she could have uttered these words dozens of times? for being essentially herself--loving, thoughtful, patient, and forgiving?
i don't know how, dear god, except to ask you to bless her as richly as she deserves and to help me live up to the example she has set. i pray that i will look as good in the eyes of my children as my mother looks in mine.
--a daughter

Country Spring
One spring I went a walking tour in the country. It was a glorious spring. Not the sort of spring they give us in these miserable times, under this shameless government -a mixture of east wind, blizzard, snow, rain, fog, frost, hail, sleet and thunder-storms, but a sunny, blue-skyed, joyous spring, such as we used to have regularly every year when I was a young man, and things were different.
It was an exceptionally beautiful spring, even for those golden days; and as I wandered through the waking land, and saw the dawning of the coming green, and watched the blush upon the hawthorn hedge, deepening each day beneath the kisses of the sun, and looked up at the proud old mother trees, dandling their numerous baby buds upon their strong fond arms holding them high for the soft west wind to caress as he passed laughing by, and marked the primrose yellow creep across the carpet of the woods, and saw the new flush of the field and saw the new light on the hills, and heard the new-found gladness of the birds, and heard from wood and farm and meadow the timid callings of the little new-born things, wondering to find themselves alive, and smelt the freshness of the earth, and felt the promise in the air, and felt a strong hand in the wind, my spirit rose within me.
Spring had come to me also, and stirred me with a strange new life, with a strange new hope. I, too, was part of nature, and it was spring! Tender leaves and blossoms were unfolding from my heart. Bright flowers of love and gratitude were opening round its roots. I felt new strength in all my limbs. New blood was running through my veins. Nobler thoughts and nobler longings were throbbing through my brain. As I walked, nature came and talked beside me, and showed me the world and myself, and the ways of God seemed clearer.
