The preservation of embryos and juveniles is a rate occurrence in the fossil record. The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers or destroyed by weathering before they can be fossilized. Ichthyosaurs had a higher chance of being preserved than did terrestrial creatures because, as marine animals, they tended to live in environments less subject to erosion. Still, their fossilization required a suite of factors: a slow rate of decay of soft tissues, little scavenging by other animals, a lack of swift currents and waves to jumble and carry away small bones, and fairly rapid burial. Given these factors, some areas have become a treasury of well-preserved ichthyosaur fossils.
The deposits at Holzmaden, Germany, present an interesting case for analysis. The ichthyosaur remains are found in black, bituminous marine shales deposited about 190 million years ago. Over the years, thousands of specimens of marine reptiles, fish and invertebrates have been recovered from these rocks. The quality of preservation is outstanding, but what is even more impressive is the number of ichthyosaur fossils containing preserved embryos. Ichthyosaurs with embryos have been reported from 6 different levels of the shale in a small area around Holzmaden, suggesting that a specific site was used by large numbers of ichthyosaurs repeatedly over time. The embryos are quite advanced in their physical development; their paddles, for example, are already well formed. One specimen is even preserved in the birth canal. In addition, the shale contains the remains of many newborns that are between 20 and 30 inches long.
Why are there so many pregnant females and young at Holzmaden when they are so rare elsewhere? The quality of preservation is almost unmatched and quarry operations have been carried out carefully with an awareness of the value of the fossils. But these factors do not account for the interesting question of how there came to be such a concentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giving birth.

cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. they spent the long afternoons praying, soothing, comforting, and retelling their shared memories.
as her mother‘s pain intensified and more medication was needed to ease her into sedation, cheryl sat for hours of silent vigil by her mother‘s bed.
each time she kissed her mother before leaving, her mother would tear up and say, "i‘m sorry you drove so far and sat for so long and i didn‘t even wake up to talk with you."
cheryl would tell her not to worry, it didn‘t matter, still her mother felt she had let her down and apologized at each good-bye until the day cheryl found a way to give her mother the same reassurance her mother had given to her so many times.

1. Don’t use electric wire from which the insulation is worn out . 不要使用绝缘包皮已经破损了的电线

3. Screws and nuts on electric appliances should be kept tight. 家电上的固定螺丝和螺母都要拧紧。
4. Disconnect all appliances from the source of electricity when not in. 家电不使用时应切断电源。
5. Porcelain lamp sockets, rather than metal ones, should be used in the basement, bathroom and near the sink. 在地下室、浴室和水池边应使用陶瓷灯座,不要使用金属灯座。
6. Never replace a fuse unless you have first turned off the service control switch. 关掉电源总开关之后,才安装保险丝。
7. Electrical fan should be equipped with guards and placed out of the way of people passing by. 电风扇应安装防护罩,不要安放在人行通道上。
8. Keep children away from electrical appliances with exposed moving parts. 要防止孩子们接触到家用电器上暴露的转动的零部件。
9. If a person has a severe electric shock, never touch him while he is in contact with a live wire. If possible, turn off the current immediately. Or use rope, clothing, and dry wood to pull the person off a live wire. 如果有人触电,而且带电的电线还在他的身上,不能和他接触。如果可能,立即切断电源,或者用绳子、衣服、干木棍等东西把人和带电的电线分开。

A Thanksgiving Day editorial(社论)in the newspaper told of a school teacher who asked her class of first graders to draw a picture of something they were thankful for. She thought of how little these children from poor neighborhoods actually had to be thankful for. But she knew that most of them would draw pictures of turkeys or tables with food. The teacher was taken aback(吃惊;惊讶)with the picture Douglas handed in… a smile childishly drawn hand.

But whose hand? The class was captivated(迷惑;困惑)by the abstract(抽象的)image. “I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food,” said one child. “A farmer,” said another, “because he grows the turkeys.” Finally when the others were at work, the teacher bent(弯腰;屈身)over Douglas’s desk and asked whose hand it was. “It’s your hand, Teacher,” he mumbled(咕哝;含糊地说).

She recalled that frequently at recess(课间休息)she had taken Douglas, a scrubby(身材矮小的)forlorn(孤独的)child by the hand. She often did that with the children. But it meant so much to Douglas. Perhaps this was everyone’s Thanksgiving, not for the material things given to us but for the chance, in whatever small way, to give to others.

Recently, one of my best friends, whom I‘ve shared just about[几乎] everything with since the first day of kindergarten[幼儿园], spent the weekend with me. Since I moved to a new town several years ago, we‘ve both always looked forward to the few times a year when we can see each other.
Over the weekend, we spent hours and hours, staying up late[迟迟不睡] into the night, talking about the people she was hanging around with[交往]. She started telling me stories about her new boyfriend, about how he experimented[尝试] with drugs and was into other self-destructive[自毁] behavior[行为]. I was blown away[震惊]! She told me how she had been lying to her parents about where she was going and even sneaking out[偷跑] to see this guy because they didn‘t want her around him. No matter how hard I tried to tell her that she deserved better, she didn‘t believe me. Her self-respect seemed to have disappeared.
I tried to convince her that she was ruining her future and heading for big trouble. I felt like I was getting nowhere[毫无进展]. I just couldn‘t believe that she really thought it was acceptable to hang with a bunch of losers, especially her boyfriend.
By the time she left, I was really worried about her and exhausted[疲惫] by the experience. It had been so frustrating[灰心的'], I had come close to telling her several times during the weekend that maybe we had just grown too far apart to continue our friendship - but I didn‘t. I put the power of friendship to the ultimate[最后的] test. We‘d been friends for far too long. I had to hope that she valued me enough to know that I was trying to save her from hurting herself. I wanted to believe that our friendship could conquer[克服] anything.
A few days later, she called to say that she had thought long and hard about our conversation, and then she told me that she had broken up with her boyfriend. I just listened on the other end of the phone with tears of joy running down my face. It was one of the truly rewarding[值得的] moments in my life. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident.
